Dion Natural Park and Wetlands

The broader Dion area sits at the junction of the Pierian plain and the lower slopes of Mount Olympus, and the wetlands that surround the ancient site have been designated a protected natural area. The floodplain of the Vaphyras River creates a network of channels, reed beds, and small pools that support a rich birdlife, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, and various waders.

The natural park trails extend beyond the archaeological zone and offer easy walking through the flat terrain. In spring, wildflowers cover the meadows. The combination of extraordinary history underfoot and wild nature all around is what makes Dion genuinely distinctive — there are few ancient sites in the world where you can watch herons fishing among the ruins.
