Mylopotas Beach

Mylopotas is the main beach of Ios — a long, broad sweep of golden sand backed by low dunes and fronted by turquoise Aegean water. In July and August it is packed with sunbeds, beach bars, watersports operators, and a clientele who have come specifically for the combination of beach by day and clubs by night. Water sports on offer include banana boats, parasailing, windsurfing, and paddleboards.

The beach is a 15-minute walk from Chora downhill, or you can take the bus that runs frequently in season. For somewhere quieter, the far end of the beach away from the main resort strip is significantly calmer. The beach itself is genuinely attractive — the sand is clean and the water clear — it is just rarely experienced in peace between June and September.

A story
Mylopotas has been a backpacker hub since the 1970s, when Ios first got its reputation as the party island of the Cyclades. The beach clubs that line it now are considerably more polished than the original scene, but the spirit — sun, sea, and music until you can't take it anymore — is unchanged.
