Drogarati Cave

Drogarati Cave, a few kilometres from the Melissani Cave near Sami, is a large stalactite and stalagmite cave open to the public. The cave system extends about 900 metres into the rock, with visitors guided through the illuminated lower sections. The main chamber is impressively large — over 60 metres across — and the formations that hang from the ceiling have been developing for around 150,000 years.

The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 16°C, refreshingly cool in summer. The visit takes about 20 minutes. Many people combine it with the Melissani Cave on the same trip, since the two are close together and contrast nicely — one geological formation above water, one below.

A story
Drogarati's main chamber, the Chamber of Exaltation, has acoustics remarkable enough that it has been used as a concert venue. The opera singer Maria Callas performed here in 1962. The cave was discovered by accident in the 18th century when an earthquake opened an entrance, and has been open to tourists since 1963.
