Pineios River Walk

The Pineios River forms the northern boundary of central Larissa and its banks have been developed into an attractive park and promenade. The riverside walk stretches several kilometres along shaded paths beneath plane trees and willows, with the pale limestone bluffs of the city rising on one side and the flat agricultural plain on the other. Early mornings and evenings it fills with joggers, dog walkers, and families.

The river itself is wide but shallow for much of the year — the Thessalian plain is one of the most intensively farmed regions in Greece and much of the Pineios's water is diverted for irrigation. What remains is pleasant enough to walk beside. The river park connects the central area of Larissa with the Alkazar Park, a larger green space to the east with a small lake, children's playgrounds, and outdoor cafes that are popular on weekends.
