Day Trips

Larissa's position in the centre of the Thessalian plain makes it a practical base for several of the region's main attractions. Meteora, with its monasteries built on sandstone pillars, is about an hour west — the drive through the mountains is part of the pleasure. The Pelion peninsula, with its forested villages and Aegean beaches, is around 90 minutes east via Volos, which is worth a stop for its seafood restaurants and the Theophilos museum. Mount Olympus, mythological home of the Greek gods, is about an hour north; base towns for hikers are Litochoro and Prionia.
