"Photographs" by Aristotelis Valaoritis. The 19th-century Greek national poet lived on the small island of Madouri off Nydri; his patriotic verse, romantic and sometimes overwrought, is steeped in the landscape of the Lefkada coast and the struggle for Greek independence.
"In Search of Schliemann" by Wilhelm Dörpfeld. Less a literary work than a scholarly argument: the German archaeologist Dörpfeld, who excavated Troy with Schliemann, became obsessed with the idea that Lefkada — not Ithaki to the south — was the Homeric Ithaca. He dug here for decades and is buried on a headland near Nydri. Reading him gives a strong sense of how seriously 19th-century Europeans took the geography of the Odyssey.
"The Greek Islands" by Lawrence Durrell has a short, lively chapter on Lefkada that captures both the rebuilt town and the back-country villages as they were in the 1970s.
