Karya

The largest of the hill villages of the Lefkada interior, set in a high green basin in the centre of the island at around 600 m. Karya has a pretty central square shaded by huge plane trees and ringed by tavernas, and a small Folklore Museum dedicated to traditional Lefkada embroidery and weaving.

Lunch under the planes is one of the better things to do on the island. The road up from Lefkada Town climbs steadily through olive groves and is itself worth the drive.

A story
Karya is famous in Greece for its distinctive embroidery — fine geometric patterns of white-on-white needlework developed by the village women in the early 20th century. The technique is attributed to a single embroiderer, Maria Stavraka, who was nearly blind and who created a style that could be worked by feel.
