The main resort town of the sheltered east coast, sitting opposite a cluster of small wooded islands. Nydri is busy, touristy, and not especially pretty in itself — a strip of tavernas, bars, and boat-trip touts along the seafront — but it is the departure point for the best boat trips on the island.
Day cruises run to Meganisi, the long green island just offshore, to Skorpios (once owned by Aristotle Onassis and the site of his and his daughter Christina's graves), and to the tiny islet of Madouri, where the 19th-century Greek national poet Aristotelis Valaoritis had his estate.
