Gythio town has no real beach of its own. The main bathing destinations are at Mavrovouni, a few kilometres south (5km of fine sand and a protected turtle-nesting area), and Selinitsa just to the north (where the Dimitrios shipwreck lies). For a quieter escape, the small coves at Vathy 8 km south have clear water and almost no facilities.
