Tzannetakis Tower (Museum of Mani)

The Tzannetakis Tower on Kranai island is one of the best-preserved Maniot fortified houses anywhere on the peninsula — built around 1829 by a family of local warlords who rose to political power in newly independent Greece. The tower is square, stone, four storeys tall, with the narrow shooting slits and the heavy iron-bound front door that characterised the Mani's chronic family feuds.

Since the 1990s the tower has housed the History and Ethnology Museum of Mani, with displays on the area's traditional tower-house architecture, customs around death and inheritance that fed the feud cycle, and the prominent role of Maniot fighters in the 1821 War of Independence. Open most days except Tuesdays; entry around 3 euros.
