Rock of Kalikatsou

A dramatic coastal rock formation on the northern coast of Patmos, Kalikatsou is carved with ancient cells and a chapel, and accessed by steps cut directly into the rock face. The site has layers of history: evidence suggests ancient ritual use possibly connected to Aphrodite, followed by Byzantine-era Christian hermit occupation. The climb to the top is short but steep, with vertiginous views over the northern bays.

The rock sits at the edge of Groikos Bay, reachable by a short walk from the road. It's one of the more atmospheric spots on the island — combining the island's spiritual history with dramatic coastal scenery — and far less visited than the monastery or the cave.

A story
Carved into the rock face are cells, cisterns, and a chapel — evidence of both ancient pagan ritual (the rock may have been sacred to Aphrodite) and later Christian hermit occupation. The hermit who lived here in the Byzantine period is said to have carved the steps into the rock face himself, working for years to make the otherwise inaccessible summit reachable.
