Antipaxos

The miniature island a few miles south of Paxi, with a permanent population in single figures and two beaches whose water is the colour of glass. Voutoumi is the larger and more famous — a stretch of bone-white shingle backed by olives and cypresses; Vrika to the north is smaller and quieter.

Small ferries run from Gaios in summer, taking about half an hour. There are two tavernas above Voutoumi beach, and that is essentially the infrastructure. Bring water, sun cream, and a book. Come back to Paxi for dinner.

A story
Almost the entire island is given over to a single grape variety — antipaxiotiko — which produces a robust, slightly sweet red wine sold mostly in the island's tavernas. The few resident families bottle it themselves; you will rarely find it on the mainland.
