Eating Out

The waterfront has the standard run of tavernas serving grilled fish, horiatiki salad, and fried calamari. Most are reliable if not exceptional. For better quality, venture a street or two back from the tourist-facing quay — prices drop and the clientele becomes more local.

Fresh fish is the obvious order: the channel between Poros and Galatas is an active fishing ground, and the day's catch shows up in most kitchens. The fruit and vegetable market in Galatas, a short boat-ride across the channel, is well worth a visit — the Peloponnese's lemon groves produce some of the best citrus in Greece.
