Agios Germanos Village

Agios Germanos is the most accessible of the Prespa villages and the practical base for most visitors. It has a small hotel, a few tavernas, and the Society for the Protection of Prespa's visitor centre, which provides maps and information about the region.

The village's 11th-century Byzantine church is well-preserved and contains original frescoes. The village itself — stone houses, narrow lanes, a central kafeneion — is a good example of traditional Macedonian architecture. From Agios Germanos, the main road descends to the lakes and the pontoon bridge to Agios Achillios island.

A story
The Byzantine church in Agios Germanos dates from 1072 AD — making it contemporaneous with the Norman Conquest of England and the Great Schism between Eastern and Western Christianity. The village was built around this church, and the surrounding houses maintain a traditional stone architecture that has changed little since the Ottoman era.
