Micro Prespa Lake

Micro Prespa — the smaller of the two Prespa lakes — is almost entirely within Greek territory, with only a small section crossing into Albania. At 42.5 km², it is a significant body of water despite its name, and its shallow, reed-fringed margins provide nesting habitat for pelicans, cormorants, herons, and egrets.

The lake can be explored by boat from Psarades — the small village on the lake's eastern shore is the main point of access. Boat trips (hire locally or through the village kafeneion) provide the best views of the pelican nesting colonies and the Byzantine rock paintings on the lake cliffs. The road around the lake passes through several small villages, all worth stopping at briefly for the views across the water.
