Getting Around

The island is manageable by public bus or hired vehicle. Buses radiate from the main terminal in Fira, connecting to the port at Athinios, the airport, Oia in the north, and the southern beach towns of Perissa and Kamari. Services run frequently in summer but thin out outside peak season.

ATVs and scooters are widely rented and popular, though the roads between the caldera villages get congested in July and August. A car gives more flexibility for reaching Akrotiri and the quieter eastern villages. Taxis serve the main routes but can be hard to find during peak hours — book in advance or ask your accommodation to arrange one.
