Evangelistria Monastery

The Monastery of the Evangelistria sits on a hillside 4km north of Skiathos Town, surrounded by pine and cypress forest. Founded in 1794, it became a place of revolutionary significance: in 1807 the Greek flag was first officially raised here, three years before the War of Independence began. The founding fathers of modern Greece — including Kolokotronis and other leaders of the 1821 uprising — took an oath of rebellion within its walls.

The monastery is still active. The main church is beautifully preserved, and the monastery produces its own honey and wine which can be bought at the gate. The walk up from town takes about 45 minutes through forest; a road also runs most of the way for those who prefer to drive or take a taxi.

A story
In 1807, fourteen years before the Greek War of Independence officially began, Skiathos patriots gathered at the Evangelistria Monastery and swore an oath of rebellion against Ottoman rule beneath a blue-and-white flag — the first formal hoisting of what would become the Greek national flag.
