Polygnotos Vagis Museum, Potamia

A small but exceptional museum in the mountain village of Potamia, dedicated to the sculptor Polygnotos Vagis (1894–1965), who was born on Thassos, emigrated to the United States in 1921, and became a significant figure in American sculpture — though he remains almost unknown outside Greece and the Greek-American community. The museum holds over 200 of his works, donated to his home village before his death, filling several rooms with figurative bronzes, stone carvings, and works on paper that show a genuinely distinctive artistic personality shaped by both his Greek origins and his decades in New York.

It is the kind of museum that surprises you. You come expecting a dutiful local collection and find something genuinely moving — a body of work by someone who fell between the categories that art history likes to use, too American for Greece, too Greek for America. Potamia itself is a pleasant mountain village worth visiting for its own sake, and the museum makes a good reason to stop here on the drive toward Ypsario.
