Thassos is the northernmost Greek island, a short ferry ride from Kavala or Keramoti on the Macedonian coast. It is one of the greenest islands in the Aegean — pine forests cover the mountainous interior, dropping to sandy beaches and coves around the coast.
A single road rings the island, well served by local buses running both clockwise and anticlockwise, making it easy to beach-hop without a car. The main town, Limenas (Thassos Town), has the remains of an ancient agora and a hilltop theatre with sea views. Alyki on the south coast has ancient marble quarries right at the water's edge — Thassos marble has been prized since antiquity and is still quarried today.
The island is popular with Greek and Bulgarian families in summer, but stays quieter than the more famous Cycladic islands. The beaches at Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia) and Paradise Beach on the east coast are among the best in northern Greece.
