Local Honey and Wine

Thassos is known for two local products worth going out of your way for: thyme honey and white wine. The honey is produced from the thyme and pine that blanket the island's hillsides, and it has a flavour that is noticeably different from supermarket honey — darker, more aromatic, with a resinous quality that reflects the landscape it comes from. You will find it in small shops in Thassos Town and in village shops throughout the island; buy from a local producer rather than a tourist shop and you will pay half the price for a better product.

The island's white wine is made primarily from the Assyrtiko grape and is dry and clean, slightly austere in a way that pairs well with seafood and the island's mineral-rich water. Several producers sell directly from farm shops in the interior villages; asking at your taverna where to find the local wine will usually produce a useful answer and sometimes a small glass to taste first. Both products travel well and make more honest souvenirs than anything sold near the ferry port.
