Xanthi has an active cafe and bar scene, sustained by the Democritus University of Thrace, which has its main campus here. The area around Vassilissis Sofias Street and the pedestrianised centre has the highest concentration of bars, many of which stay open late on weekends. The old town has quieter cafes in restored mansions with good coffee and views.
During the Old Town Festival in early September, outdoor bars and music stages operate throughout the upper town for a long weekend — the best time to experience Xanthi's social life at its most festive.
