Eating Out

Xanthi has a lively eating scene driven by its large student population. The old town has the most characterful restaurants — several converted mansions serve grilled meats and mezedes in atmospheric settings. The city's mixed population gives the food a slightly different character from standard Greek taverna cooking: you'll find dishes influenced by Thracian and Pomak traditions, including lamb dishes cooked with local spices and thick yoghurt accompaniments.

The main square and the streets around it have plenty of cafes and fast-food places aimed at students. For a proper meal, head uphill to the old town.
