The Pest-side embankment between the Chain Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge is one of Budapest's most rewarding walks. The wide promenade hugs the river with unobstructed views across to Buda Castle and Gellert Hill, and the stretch is particularly magical at dusk when the buildings on both banks light up. Partway along, look for the Shoes on the Danube Bank — sixty pairs of cast-iron shoes created by sculptor Gyula Pauer as a memorial to Jews shot into the river by Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. The memorial is simple, devastating, and impossible to walk past without stopping. Several terrace cafes line the promenade if you want to sit and take in the panorama.
