A traditional Hungarian cellar restaurant near the Csokonai Theatre, the Csokonai Étterem has been around long enough to feel reliably old-fashioned: vaulted brick ceilings, dark wood furniture, gypsy violin some evenings, and a menu heavy on goulash, stuffed cabbage, and grilled meats. This is the place to try the local Debreceni sausage and the bográcsgulyás (cauldron goulash) the city has been serving for a century.
Portions are generous, prices low, and the staff politely tolerant of foreigners pointing at the menu. Good for an unfussy traditional dinner before or after the theatre.
