MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art

MODEM, on Baltazár Dezső tér next to the Csokonai Theatre, is the eastern Hungarian centre for contemporary art — five thousand square metres of gallery space across three floors, opened in 2006 in a converted commercial building. The permanent collection is light but the rotating shows reliably bring in major Hungarian contemporary work and the occasional international name.

The cafe-shop in the foyer is one of the few genuinely good independent cafes near the centre. Closed on Mondays; check the current programme online before going as some shows are only up for a few weeks.
