Timewheel (Időkerék)

A short walk from the Nagyerdő tram terminus stands one of Debrecen's quirkier sights: the Timewheel, an eight-metre-tall glass hourglass installed in 2004 for Hungary's accession to the European Union. Sixty tonnes of red sand drain through the wheel over the course of a year, and on New Year's Eve the city ceremonially turns the wheel a hundred and eighty degrees to start the cycle again. Until a slightly larger version was built in Budapest the same year, this was the largest hourglass in the world.

Five minutes is enough — but it makes a satisfying detour on the way to or from the thermal baths.
