Eger has a good range of restaurants for a city its size, concentrated around Dobó Square and the main pedestrian streets. The cooking is firmly Hungarian: gulyás, pörkölt (meat stew), töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage), grilled meats, freshwater fish. Portions are large. The local wine — Egri Bikavér and Leányka, a white — pairs well with all of it.
For a full Hungarian dinner, look for a traditional Hungarian étterem (restaurant) rather than tourist-facing places. The quality gap between the places that cater to Hungarians and those that cater to tour groups is often significant. Pálinkabotozó (pálinka bars) serve the local fruit brandies as an aperitif or digestif; Eger has several.
