Eger Thermal Baths

Eger has been a spa town since Ottoman times, and its thermal baths remain one of the best reasons to spend a night here rather than day-tripping from Budapest. The main complex, the Eger Thermal Bath (Egri Termálfürdő), has indoor and outdoor pools fed by warm mineral water, along with saunas and various wellness facilities.

The outdoor pools are particularly pleasant in spring and autumn, when the air is cool but the water warm. The facilities have been modernized in recent decades without losing the atmosphere of a proper Hungarian thermal bath. A session in the pools, followed by a walk through the old town and dinner with a bottle of Egri Bikavér, constitutes a very good day in Eger.

A story
Eger's thermal waters were used by the Ottomans during their occupation of the city — they built a large bath complex that the Hungarians dismantled after the reconquest. The present thermal facilities rest on the same geological system, fed by springs that reach the surface at around 28–29°C. The Ottomans are thus indirectly responsible for one of Eger's most popular tourist attractions, which is a pleasing irony given how thoroughly the rest of their architectural legacy was removed.
