Kőszeg is in western Hungary, close to the Austrian border in Vas County. The nearest major city is Szombathely, 18 km to the southeast.
By train: There is a direct rail connection from Szombathely to Kőszeg, with several trains a day. The journey takes about 25 minutes. From Budapest, you take the main westbound line to Szombathely and change there. Direct trains from Budapest Keleti to Szombathely run frequently and take around 2.5 hours.
By bus: Regional buses connect Kőszeg to Szombathely and Sopron. Buses are slower than the train from Szombathely but useful if you are coming from Sopron (around 1 hour).
By car: Kőszeg is about 220 km west of Budapest via the M1 and M86 motorways, roughly 2.5 hours of driving. From Vienna, the journey is around 80 km (about 1 hour), making it a feasible day trip from Austria. Parking is available near the old town.
From Austria: The border crossing at Kőszeg-Rattersdorf is open and convenient if coming by car from Burgenland.
