Írott-kő (Geschriebenstein)

The Írott-kő — called Geschriebenstein on the Austrian side of the border — is a 884-metre summit in the Kőszeg Mountains, the highest point in Transdanubia (the part of Hungary west of the Danube). The name means "written stone" in both languages, after inscriptions carved into the rocks near the summit. The mountain sits directly on the Hungarian-Austrian border, and a stone marker at the top straddles both countries.

The walk up from Kőszeg takes around two to three hours each way through beech and oak forests. The trail is well-marked and not technically demanding, though there is significant elevation gain. At the summit is a lookout tower with views across the Burgenland plain into Austria and back toward the Hungarian highlands. The area around the summit is protected as a nature reserve, and the forests are home to deer, wild boar, and a range of forest birds.
