Avas Lookout Tower

The Avas is a forested hill rising above the city centre, its slopes dotted with a remarkable collection of medieval wine cellars carved directly into the volcanic tuff. At the top stands an 18th-century Calvinist bell tower and, just below the summit, a lookout tower offering the best views over Miskolc and the surrounding valley.

The climb from the city centre takes about 20 minutes on foot through the cellars — a route that is more interesting than the alternative path. In warm evenings, the cellar district comes alive as locals sit outside on wooden benches with bottles of local wine; it is one of the most characteristic scenes in Miskolc. The hill also has a small zoo and a small open-air theatre used for summer performances.

The lookout itself is modest but the views are good, particularly at dusk when the valley lights begin to come on. The Avas is one of those places that locals take for granted but visitors almost always remember.

A story
The Avas Hill contains over 800 wine cellars carved into the soft tuff rock, many of them still in use. The cellars date back to the Middle Ages, when the hill was covered in vineyards. The wine region has declined over the centuries, but a walk along the cellars in the evening — doors thrown open, locals gathered outside — gives a vivid picture of an older Hungarian social life that survives in few other cities.
