Diósgyőr Castle is the most striking historical sight in the Miskolc area — a 13th-century fortress with four round corner towers that dominates a hillside at the western edge of the city. The castle was a royal residence under the Árpád and Angevin dynasties, falling into disrepair after the Ottoman era. It has been partially restored and today houses a museum with exhibitions on medieval Hungarian life, armour, and the castle's history.
The interior courtyard is used for historical re-enactments, jousting tournaments, and open-air events in summer. Even if the exhibitions don't appeal, the climb up to the towers is worth it for the view over the surrounding valley. The castle sits adjacent to the Diósgyőr district, a neighbourhood with a different character from the city centre, with older housing and a more industrial past.
The bus from central Miskolc takes about 20 minutes. The surrounding park is pleasant for a walk and the neighbourhood has a few cafes.
