The bulky Greek Catholic cathedral on Kossuth tér is the most prominent building in the centre of Nyíregyháza, and the seat of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church. The exterior is imposing rather than beautiful — a late 19th-century pile in a vaguely Byzantine style. Inside, it is richer: the iconostasis and liturgical furnishings reflect the Eastern rite that distinguishes this church from both Roman Catholicism and the Orthodox tradition.
The Greek Catholic presence here reflects the history of the northeastern Hungarian plains, where Greek Catholic Rusyn and Romanian communities settled and where Greek Catholic faith became a marker of regional identity. Even if you are not religious, the cathedral is worth a look for the way it anchors the city's unusual religious geography.
