The Nyíregyháza Zoo (known also as Sóstó Zoo) is considered one of the best zoos in Hungary, and one of the largest. Its 30 hectares house a wide range of animals from different continents, including several species bred as part of European conservation programmes. The enclosures are well-designed and considerably more spacious than the cramped facilities found in many older Hungarian zoos.
The zoo is a 5-minute walk from the Sóstó Village Museum and can easily be combined with it for a full day's outing. It is popular with families from across northeastern Hungary, so expect crowds on summer weekends. There is a small train that circles the main paths for those who don't want to walk the full distance.
