Kossuth tér is the main square and historic heart of Nyíregyháza. The square is dominated by the Greek Catholic cathedral on one side and flanked by civic buildings, shops, and a pedestrian zone that extends through the centre. It is the natural starting point for exploring the city on foot.
Several other religious buildings — a Lutheran church, a Calvinist church, an Orthodox church, and the synagogue — are all within a few minutes' walk of the square, reflecting the unusually mixed religious character of this corner of northeastern Hungary. In summer the square hosts a small market and outdoor seating. In winter it is where the city's Christmas market sets up.
