Bánhida and the Old Town

The settlement that became modern Tatabánya is really a fusion of four older villages — Bánhida, Felsőgalla, Alsógalla, and Tatabánya itself — formally joined in 1947. Bánhida, on the southern edge of the city, still preserves something of its village character: a baroque church, a small main square, and a few nineteenth-century houses on quiet side streets.

It is worth a short stop on the way to or from the Turul Monument to see what was here before the mines and the apartment blocks. The church (built in the eighteenth century and remodelled later) is the obvious focal point.
