Turul Monument

Looming over Tatabánya from the limestone cliffs of Kőhegy is the Turul Monument — a vast bronze bird of prey with a wingspan of fourteen metres, holding the legendary Sword of Attila in its talons. It was raised in 1907 to mark the millennium of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian basin and is among the largest bird statues in Europe.

The monument stands on a stone pedestal at the edge of the cliff, with a sweeping view across the Tatabánya basin to the Gerecse Hills beyond. You can drive most of the way up; the final approach is a short walk through the pine woods. Go in the late afternoon for the best light, and bring a windbreak — it can be exposed up there in any season.
