Heroes' Gate

Tower-gate marking the entrance to the Castle District

The Hősök kapuja — Heroes' Gate — is a stout limestone tower-gate at the foot of the Castle District, built in 1936 as a memorial to soldiers who died in the First World War. The gate frames the entrance to the hilltop street and now houses a small castle museum and an observation platform at the top.

The climb up the spiral stair gives a fine view back into the old town and a useful orientation before walking along the ridge. The museum inside displays archaeological finds from the castle excavations and a few medieval architectural fragments.
