May to early October is the best time to visit. The summer here is warm but not as fierce as on the Hungarian plain — Veszprém sits at 270 metres above sea level — and the long evenings on Óváros tér are one of the city's small pleasures.
The VeszprémFest (mid-July) and the Utcazene Fesztivál (street music festival, late July) draw crowds and bring extra life to the centre. Hotel prices rise around these events.
Winter is cold and grey but the Castle Hill in snow is exceptionally photogenic. Most attractions stay open year-round.
