Birr

Georgian Offaly town shaped by Birr Castle, astronomy, and graceful Midlands streets.

Birr is a handsome Georgian town in County Offaly, built around elegant streets, a formal square, and the long presence of the Parsons family at Birr Castle. It is small enough to see on foot but distinctive enough to justify a day in the Midlands.

The castle grounds are the clear reason to come. Birr Castle holds the Leviathan of Parsonstown, a 19th-century telescope that was the largest in the world for decades and helped push astronomy beyond the solar system. The gardens and science centre turn that story into a full visit rather than a single curiosity.

The town around it matters too. Emmett Square, Oxmantown Mall, John's Hall, and the Seffin Stone give Birr more architectural texture than most towns its size. Add the theatre, old pubs, and the August vintage festival, and Birr feels like a lived-in heritage town rather than a castle car park.

Things to Do

Birr's sights cluster around the castle, Georgian streets, and small but memorable pieces of local history. Start with the castle demesne, then walk the town centre rather than driving between stops.
