Kiltimagh

Small County Mayo town shaped by emigration history, restored railway heritage, and quiet western bogland.

Kiltimagh is a small town in County Mayo, in the rural west of Ireland. Like many towns in this part of the country, it lost much of its population to emigration over the decades — a history reflected in its quiet main street and the surrounding empty countryside.

The town has made efforts to reinvent itself. The Kiltimagh Museum and Railway Station occupies a restored Victorian station building and tells the story of the town and its emigrants; the adjacent sculpture park is free to walk. The surrounding bogland and hill country offers honest walking through an uncommonly quiet landscape. It is not a destination in its own right, but if you are driving through Mayo between Knock and Swinford you will pass through, and it is worth stopping for more than just a cup of tea.

Kiltimagh is also notable as the birthplace of Antoine Ó Raifteirí, the 18th-century blind poet who wandered Connacht composing verse in Irish and remains one of the most celebrated figures in the Irish language tradition.
