Europe > Ireland > Boyle
Boyle is a small Roscommon town that earns its stop with a good mix of stone, lake, and old landed power. It sits just west of Lough Key, close enough to Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon to work as an easy detour, but with more substance than a plain road break.
The town's strongest sight is Boyle Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery with enough surviving church fabric to give the place weight. A short walk away, King House tells a different story: Georgian landlords, military use, restoration, and local collections inside one of Connacht's more imposing town houses.
Boyle also has the advantage of Lough Key Forest Park, just outside town. That makes it more than a heritage stop. You can spend the morning among abbey arches and Georgian rooms, then walk or cycle through lakeside woods in the afternoon.
