Europe > Ireland > Cong
Cong is a tiny Mayo village with more story than its size suggests. It sits on the narrow limestone neck between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, where water disappears underground, old monastic ruins sit beside the river, and coach tours still arrive looking for John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.
The village is not pretending to be undiscovered. The Quiet Man trade is part of the place now, sometimes charming and sometimes a little theatrical. But Cong has enough substance to survive the film nostalgia: Cong Abbey is a serious medieval ruin, Pigeon Hole Cave gives the limestone landscape a bit of mystery, and the surrounding woods make a fine slow walk.
Come for half a day from Galway or Westport, not for a full itinerary. Wander the abbey, follow the paths through Cong Wood, drop into the Quiet Man Museum if the film means anything to you, and leave time for the odd geography of the place: a village where the lakes are close, the river hides, and local legend has had plenty of room to grow.
