Enniskerry

County Wicklow village near Dublin, serving as the gateway to Powerscourt Estate and its waterfall.

Enniskerry is a small village in County Wicklow, perched on the Glencullen River in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. It sits just south of the Dublin border, about 24 km from the city centre, making it an easy escape from the capital.

The village is the gateway to Powerscourt Estate, one of Ireland's grandest country houses with spectacular formal gardens laid out in descending terraces with mountain views. The Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland's highest at 121 metres, is six kilometres further south through the deer park. The Wicklow Mountains stretch out behind the village, and walking the surrounding hills — including the Wicklow Way long-distance route and the Sugar Loaf summit — gives access to some of the finest upland scenery near Dublin. Enniskerry itself has a pretty triangular village green, a handful of cafes, and the kind of quiet that makes a half-day trip from Dublin feel like a proper retreat.

Getting There

Enniskerry is about 24 kilometres from Dublin city centre. The most direct public transport option is bus route 185 from Bray, which is itself easily reached from Dublin by DART (suburban rail). The 185 takes about 20 minutes from Bray and runs frequently enough for a day trip.

By car from Dublin, take the N11 south towards Bray and turn off at Kilpedder or Kilmacanogue; the drive takes 35-45 minutes depending on Dublin traffic. Parking is available in the village and at the Powerscourt Estate entrance. Cyclists use the route from Bray along the back roads through Killarney — a pleasant and not too demanding ride of about 10 kilometres.
