DLR LexIcon

A striking modern library and cultural centre right on the seafront, the LexIcon replaced a 1970s shopping centre that blocked the sea views. The curved, off-white building is designed to echo the lines of the harbour, and the top-floor reading room looks directly out over Dublin Bay.

The ground floor has a café and regular arts events; the upper floors are quiet, well-stocked, and free to enter. If you want to sit with a book or a view for an hour, this is the place.

A story
The LexIcon opened in 2014 after a decade of planning disputes — locals worried about the seafront views, and the design went through multiple architects before landing on Carr Cotter & Naessén's nautical-influenced form. It's now the county's main public library and one of the better pieces of contemporary architecture in greater Dublin.
