The West Pier is quieter and slightly wilder than the East Pier — less maintained, more salt-sprayed, and on rougher days more dramatically exposed to Atlantic swells coming up the bay. The two piers together define the harbour, one of the largest and finest on Ireland's east coast. Sailors have used it as a safe anchorage for two centuries; the Royal Irish Yacht Club on the West Pier dates from 1831.
