Dunmore Cave

A limestone cave famous for its Viking-era massacre and remarkable calcite formations

Dunmore Cave, 11 kilometres north of Kilkenny, is one of Ireland's finest limestone show caves — a series of chambers and passages decorated with exceptional calcite formations including stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and the remarkable "Market Cross" column, one of the largest known calcite formations in Ireland.

The cave has been known since at least the 9th century — it is mentioned in early Irish texts as one of the "wonders of Ireland" — and the Viking-era massacre of 928 CE adds a layer of dark history to the geological spectacle. The guided tour (the only way in) takes about 45 minutes and covers the main chambers, with good lighting showing the formations at their best. The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 10°C, so bring a layer regardless of outside weather.

A story
In 928 CE, Norse Vikings raided the cave at Dunmore where the local people had taken refuge. According to the Annals, a thousand people were killed or taken as slaves. Excavations in the 20th century found the bones of at least 44 individuals — mostly women and children — along with Viking coins and silver objects, confirming that the massacre was real, if the number was exaggerated.
