St John's Priory is one of the quieter pieces of Kilkenny's medieval fabric, standing just off the busier streets east of the River Nore. The surviving church and ruins belonged to an Augustinian priory founded in the 13th century, and the most memorable feature is the long east window, a narrow sweep of Gothic stonework that still gives the place height and dignity.
It is not a substitute for Kilkenny Castle or St Canice's Cathedral, but it rounds out the city's Medieval Mile nicely. Stop here while walking between John Street and the river, especially if you like the smaller ecclesiastical remains that show how dense medieval Kilkenny once was.
