Palazzetto dei Nobili

A small Renaissance palace on Via di Mezzo, a short walk north of Piazza del Duomo. The Palazzo della Congregazione dei Nobili — its full name — was built in the sixteenth century as the seat of L'Aquila's noble brotherhood and is one of the few civilian buildings in the centre that retained much of its original interior decoration through the centuries.

It was badly damaged in 2009, then carefully restored, and now functions as an auditorium and exhibition space hosting concerts, lectures, and small art shows. Check the calendar at the door, or step in to see the restored stuccoes and frescoed ceiling on the upper floor if an event is in progress — the building is the easiest place in the centre to see a working Renaissance interior put back together piece by piece.
