San Silvestro

Romanesque church in L'Aquila with a quiet stone interior and fresco fragments.

San Silvestro is one of L'Aquila's older churches, a sober Romanesque building set away from the city's grander squares. Its appeal is in the stonework, the restrained facade, and the sense of a medieval city still visible beneath the long story of earthquakes and rebuilding.

Inside, look for the surviving frescoes and the calm proportions rather than theatrical decoration. It pairs well with the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle and the city's other religious buildings, giving a quieter view of L'Aquila's layered Abruzzo character.
